KV Taylor writes things. They're scary and sometimes pretty and always f#@ked. KVTaylor.com works, too. Her not-so-secret superhero/pr0n star identity is Katey Hawthorne. She also writes things, but they involve lots of superpowers and sex. Er, romance. Right, that. KateyHawthorne.com FTW. |

Hello, I am looking to educate myself on Warren a little bit. I don’t really know much about him outside of the early 90’s Uncanny X-Men cartoon. I did read some of the X-Force he was in but that’s it. Basically I was wondering if you could direct me to any story arcs, specific trade paperbacks, or comic issues that he is featured or involved in. Thanks!
Hi there!
Good question. Sometimes when you’re interested in learning more about a character that’s got 50 years of back story, it can be a little intimidating to try and wade through all of the history for the gems.
Warren first appeared in X-Men by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and stayed in the title until issue #93. Obviously these were the first looks into the character, but in my opinion you can get just as much fulfillment and glimpse of the character in the more modern Original X-Men retelling stories (which are also MUCH easier and cheaper to find) and those include X-Men: The Hidden Years, X-Men: First Class (volumes 1 & 2, plus specials), and Warren’s Angel: Revelations mini series.
If you’re interested in Warren outside of the X-Men, Champions vol 1 #1-17(1970’s) and New Defenders vol 1 #125-152 (1980’s) had some interesting interactions with some MU characters like Black Widow, Hercules, Valkyrie and Ghost Rider. These issues also included Iceman and Beast. They’re a bit on the campy side, but I found them to be enjoyable and a nice change of pace.
X-Factor volume 1 is, like, ESSENTIAL Warren reading! Specifically, I would get your hands on the first 35 issues for sure. The first six were written by Bob Layton and the rest Louise Simonson. It was this run that Warren had his first encounter with Apocalypse and became the Horseman of Death. This was also the series that included his rivalry with (in my opinion) one of his best nemesis’, Cameron Hodge. Warren remained in this title off and on until issue #69. The rest of the team was the original X-Men and did include a number of crossovers including Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, X-Tinction Agenda, and Mutant Massacre. You can find all of those crossovers in trade paper back (I literally see them as like every comic shop I step foot into, and Amazon has them as well). I enjoyed all of them, but YMMV.
Warren did also have some good development in Uncanny X-Men following rejoining the X-Men as Archangel. Those would be the Portacio and then the Lobdell eras. You’re looking at roughly #282-310? That’s off the top of my head so forgive me if I’m off an issue or so, lol. He was in an out of X-Men volume 2 at the time as his relationship with Psylocke began and during the time leading up to Scott and Jean’s wedding. I would say look for issues 25-39ish.
After that, Warren’s was in and out of minis, random arcs here and there. I would say look for Archangel & Psylocke: Crimson Dawn, Joe Casey’s Uncanny X-Men run (#396-409), X-Force volume 3 #1-28, and (of course) the first 18 issues of Uncanny X-Force.
Stay away from Chuck Austen’s Uncanny X-Men, which ran from #411-447ish. Matt Fraction’s run #498-53ish was also pretty pointless despite a whole ton of appearances in there.
He’s appeared in a ton of other specials and titles but they were mediocre or he was just kind of there and not getting much development.
If I had to choose a random standalone issue that is a must have, it would be X-Men vol 2 #74 written by Joe Kelly and penciled by Carlos Pacheco.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you’d like something more specific.
(note: this is all MAIN CONTINUITY aka Earth-616. If you’d like AU stories, I can give you those as well.)

“You gotta kind of bounce back and forth between charm and disinterest”
… this is supposed to be a horrible advice, right?Of course it is. It’s *Warren*.
^One more reason to love McKelvie. Piling up yet? Thought so.
Scott Summers, you do need to chill the fuck out.
