KV Taylor writes things. They're scary and sometimes pretty and always f#@ked. KVTaylor.com works, too. Her not-so-secret superhero/pr0n star identity is Katey Hawthorne. She also writes things, but they involve lots of superpowers and sex. Er, romance. Right, that. KateyHawthorne.com FTW. |
hi guys! i started a blog thisisnotromani, which focuses on calling out racist, anti-ziganist people. if any of you could spread the word, that’d be awesome! thank you all<3
Yay!!
The whole thing is awesome, but on a personal note, the “no more racists” image delights me beyond measure.

Dear Diary:
It’s been 2 years, 11 months, and 1 day.
Nightcrawler is still dead.Ouch. My heart. :(
But really tho.
[snip]Northstar and Karma are forefront in Astonishing X-Men. They were the stars of the first two arcs of Liu’s run. Northstar’s currently facing the legal ramifications of his whirlwind wedding to Kyle, which is surprisingly mature and aware fallout given how much the marriage came off as an event. Neither one has vanished — hell, either one of them has probably gotten more page-time in this run than Wolverine and Gambit combined.
[Also? Timeline of events is: half-elf (Bill Mantlo, 1987 and long since retconned away), outing (Lobdell, 1992), the month of editors not paying attention (Feb/March 2005), and wedding (2012). God knows little of this is at all progressive and I don’t give Mantlo or Millar a pass in the least, but also keep in mind that we’re looking at nearly three decades of shifting attitudes wrt to queer portrayals as encapsulated in one character, and not entirely recent events.]
Fearless Defenders introduced a lesbian cast member in its debut just last month. X-Treme X-Men has portrayed its versions of Wolverine and Hercules in an unquestionably homosexual relationship. Mystique is about to have a very prominent role in WatXM. (For better or for worse.) Rictor and Shatterstar are still around in Astonishingly Sales-Stable X-Factor.
I agree with a lot of your points, and I think that Marvel (and DC) has the inadmirable habit of wanting backpats for their queer characters when they trot them out for diversity points while sticking their fingers in their ears when readers complain about lack of steady representation or problematic portrayals. But let’s not be dismissive of the stuff they’re actually doing right, because that doesn’t help the situation either.
Weeping at the state of bisexuality in either universe. And at the mess that is Northstar’s history.
Wasn’t it also Mantlo that did the fucked up “Puck is really a tall man possessed by a demon” thing? So many things about post-Byrne Alpha Flight to be upset about.
Mantlo’s crimes against Alpha Flight were legion:
1) Just…everything he did to the Beaubier twins, especially Northstar. That half-elf mess? That was the lesser of two evils. Mantlo’s original plan was to out Northstar by having him die of AIDS. Editorial stepped in and nixed it, because there could not be any acknowledgement of gay characters in the MU (and, as everyone knows, only gay men can get AIDS!), resulting in an 11th hour rewrite that, along with the above-mentioned silliness, managed to get the twins’ names wrong.
2) Taking a book with a unique team structure and characters that had their own lives and interests, then erasing all of that to bring them under one roof at the beck and call of the government that had already cut them loose once. Avengers North indeed.
3) Despite Byrne explicitly stating that Puck was born with his dwarfism, Mantlo went with the demon story. Which ties into…
4) When Mantlo came onto the book, he inherited a team that was unusually diverse - a female leader without powers, one non-neurotypical character, a demi-goddess, one queer character, two differentially-abled characters, and two First Nations characters. The only default dudes on the team were Madison and Sasquatch (and Sasquatch was put on the shelf for a bit following being beaten to scrap by the Hulk, which he totally had coming). By the time Mantlo was done, Heather had gotten so insecure about her lack of powers that she wrapped herself in her dead husband’s suit, becoming yet another in a long line of female heroes derived from a male counterpart; Bochs and Snowbird were dead; and Puck, Northstar, Aurora, Talisman, and Shaman had been written out. Who was left, then? Heather as Vindicator, Madison, Purple Girl, Manikin, and Sasquatch (now wearing Snowbird’s old body, but trust me, it was nowhere near as interesting an exploration as it might sound). Blech.
All of this.
Also Julie Power/Lightspeed is an awesome bisexual girl who is not on this here list. And is hooked up with Karolina Dean in the most rainbowadorbs ship ever that had better not die in obscurity.
Random and at this point only semi-related point because Alpha Flight yay.

List of Marvel Characters, Ranked by Importance.
Let’s just pretend they accidentally missed a * off Sue Storm there, hey.
No female characters have three asterisks by their names actually.
Right, but it’s especially noticeable when *everyone else on Sue’s team has three*.
Exactly.
Though apparently women on the “less important” teams are as important as their men-counterparts. Ugh.

#can you imagine if we left these 4 guys alone in the top floor of stark tower for like a month #or even just a week #SHIT WOULD GET DONE #we’d probably have interstellar travel in 3 days
I have to disagree with the tags because I feel as though within six hours, Richards and Stark would be in a “I’m the smartest” pissing match. Peter would be to busy fanboying the fuck out over being in the same room as his heros. And poor Bruce would be in the corner doing yoga trying not to Hulk out because OMG TONY SHUT UP AND STOP BAITING REED.
It would end with Hawkeye having to tranquilize them all from an air vent.
So accurate.
Tony and Reed would just be too much arrogance for one room.

Another time that a Marvel writer managed to misspell Northstar’s name. Repeatedly. On the same page.
Have people never seen any of McKelvie’s work before? He’s drawing Billy and Teddy in the same style he’s always done for comics. There’s nothing new or “gayer” about YA now. In fact, I think these criticisms speak a lot more about readers’ own homophobic prejudices than they do about McKelvie. So please just stfu already unless you have something substantive to contribute.
Homophobic prejudices? Even gay people are chiming in and hoping they’re not reduced to stereotypes. Yes, it’s McKelvie’s style—which is a bit less worrisome as a result of that—but the fact is that he could have kept the hair, for instance, similar to Billy’s original design. People aren’t saying it’s definitively too gay; they’re saying that the characters look a little more stereotypical now and that, as readers, they hope they aren’t reduced to Token Gay Characters because we already get boatloads of that in media.
To reiterate: regardless of that it’s McKelvie’s overall style, the fact is that the designs for Billy and Teddy are quite different from ones before (even differing styles used similar designs). As a result, many people think it makes them look more stereotypically-gay, and they’re worried that it will reduce previously-three-dimensional characters into stereotypes. It’s not an issue of “THEY’RE DEFINITELY TOO GAY”, it’s just trepidation.
Stop lying. People are explicitly saying that Billy looks “too gay.” Check the Billy Kaplan tag. Sorry, but this self-hatred is nagl on you.
Look, the problem here is that people are failing to define some sort of nebulous “gay look,” and then not only quantifying that, but also making a value judgment about the quantity; that “too gay” is distasteful. So by extension, some amount of gay is okay, but don’t you dare cross that line into Too Gaysville! We need some amount of straight in our gayboys.
(Cutting this because it turned out way too long.)
^ ALL OF THESE THINGS ^
Oh man the last paragraph in that link, too.
BOOM.
Look I’m sorry I think I’m gonna have to start asking comic book people if they like McKelvie’s work (also Gillen’s, though he got saddled with AvX, poor dude) and if they don’t we can’t be friends.

The Mutie Horror Picture Show by BillWalko
Cutest Thor Ever via Mary Sue.
This is adorable!
I AM GOING TO ACQUIRE THIS CHILD AND LOVE HER
THIS MIDGARDIAN CHILD HIS GOOD TASTE! METHINKS PERHAPS WE ARE SEEING A FUTURE FEMALE WARRIOR!
My head canon is that each of the Avengers ends up with core group of fangirl/boys, like Natasha’s (or the one she acknowledges) are teenage girls mainly who see her as their hero, little boys love the Hulk, but Thor? Little girls between like the ages of 4 and 10, cause dude he is a Prince, who rides on a rainbow bridge, and is basically the fairy tale prince in real life. And Thor fucking loves it. His room at the Tower is just plastered with drawings they send him, and he tries as hard as he can to respond to each and every letter he gets.
HEADCANON ACCEPTED.
And Clint and Tony would try to tease Thor about it but he’s just so proud of all his little fangirls and of the drawings and other things they send him and he’s so earnest about it that Clint and Tony end up more than a little jealous.
I AM SO OKAY WITH THIS IDEA
and oh man I just picture him meeting one of his little baby fans and they have their own little baby mjolnir and he asks her if she’d like to hold the real one, and her eyes get all big because what?? only thor can hold mjolnir! she knows that!! So he crouches down next to her, gently holding her hand as it holds mjolnir so that even though he’s the one holding the weight, she gets to feel like she’s actually the one holding the hammer and her eyes go half as big as her whole head as grins all big and he tells her ”clearly you are worthy, little warrior!”
STOP IT
MY POOR HEART
…I may need to slip this tidbit into a fic somewhere.
